━ Elijah Mikaelson━ Mystic Falls was a place where Elijah Mikaelson did not expect to travel to anytime soon. It was the land that he grew up on over a thousand years ago and of course so much had changed during that time. But after he learned about Katerina's doppelganger, he needed to come back to Mystic Falls. But was he going to kill this mystery woman? Or protect her? He hadn't made his decision quite yet. But he also knew that his brother wouldn't be far behind. They had separated years ago and went on different paths, but he knew that Niklaus was on the hunt for Katherine's doppelganger in order to finally break the curse that had been placed on him. The curse that bound his werewolf side. He wanted to become a true hybrid. To finally create a hybrid army that was loyal to him. And that was something that Elijah could not allow. He would not allow him to sacrifice a potentially innocent woman. Because what kind of man would he be if he sat by and allowed that to happen? He would not be a man of honor like he had claimed to be.
It was quiet in the small town. Elijah had decided to take up a teaching position at the Mystic Falls high school as the English teacher. Literature was something that he had enjoyed, so it was a good disguise. And he went by Elijah Smith since coming back to Mystic Falls. Most supernatural creatures knew the original family by their name. Not by face. So if they heard 'Mikaelson', that would have been extremely suspicious and he was sure that Niklaus would end up in the town sooner than expected. And that was something that he did not want to happen. He needed to gain information about the doppelganger.
As far as he knew, her name was Elena Gilbert and she was a human. Which was impossible since he had heard that Katherine had died in the church in 1864. So then, how was this possible? The original vampire had much to uncover, but right now he had to prepare for his first class. And Elena happened to be in it. Actually, Elijah made sure that she was. He wanted to study her in a way that wouldn't be obvious. He wanted to try to get to know her and this was the only way that he could truly get to know her without outright causing a scene. This was the perfect cover for the original.
While the class began filing into the classroom, Elijah wrote his name on the board in his elegant handwriting. Mr. Smith. Straight and to the point. It was is first day at the school and he had things planned. A little bit of an ice breaker so that he could get to know his students more. But mainly he wanted to use it as a way to get to know Elena. "Good morning." He said to the class as he turned to face some of the students. Some were still coming into his classroom, but the final bell didn't ring yet to indicate the start of class.

Elena Gilbert
Summer break had finally come to an end, which meant it was time for the students of Mystic Falls to return to school. Most of the students were excited for the new school year and couldn't wait to reunite with their friends after spending their summer breaks apart, but there was one student who wasn't particularly excited to be returning to school. Elena Gilbert was not looking forward to the new school year at all. Not after what happened on that fateful night when she lost her parents. Truth be told, she was dreading going back and facing all those people, including her friends. She knew how all of them would see her. As the sad little girl who lost her parents and she didn't want to deal with that. Their sorrow. Their pity. What she wanted was for things to go back to normal. Back to a time where things were good once more. Simpler. Her parents would still be alive and she would be the prettiest, most popular girl in school. Last year, things had been so great. Perfect even. She had been the head of the cheerleading squad and had just so happened to be dating the football quarterback, the most handsome and popular guy in school. Hanging out with her best friends, Bonnie and Caroline. Going to all sorts of cool parties. Things had been good then. Now things were different. Elena wasn't that beautiful, popular girl anymore. Everything was different now.
She remembered that tragic night as if it had only happened yesterday. Elena had been at a bonfire with her friends, but ended up getting into a fight with her boyfriend, Matt, so she had called her parents and asked them to come pick her up. She recalled getting into the car with her parents, remembered her parents smiling and laughing as they made the journey home. Then the next thing she knew, the car was swerving and sliding on the road before falling off the bridge and into the water. The car slowly sinking, drowning as it became enveloped by the dark water. Her whole world disappeared until there was nothing but water. She remembered feeling like she was suffocating, the pressure of the water practically crushing her. Also, she remembered struggling to get out, but it had been no use. The water's pressure was too strong. There was no doubt she was going to die. She knew it. The brunette remembered the intense fear she had felt before everything went black. Then, she was awake. No longer in the water. Instead, she lay on the shore. How had she gotten out? That question still plagued her to this day. How was she still alive? She shouldn't have survived. Yet, she had. Even now, Elena remembered how devastated she had been when she realized her parents were gone. Dead. It still devastated her. They shouldn't have died. It was all her fault. She shouldn't have had them come pick her up. The sadness, the heartbreak, the guilt was still very much there and the young female Gilbert wasn't sure if she would ever fully recover from it all. Ever since the accident, she was afraid to go near the water or even get in a car. Every time she did, her mind flashed back to that terrible night on the bridge where her parents had died, leaving her all alone. It was all her fault. She just had to call her parents and have them pick her up. Now they were gone forever and Elena felt completely and utterly alone. Looking back on it, a part of her wished that she had died along with them. At the same time, she knew she needed to live and look after her brother Jeremy. He needed her. Her younger brother wasn't doing so well, which was to be expected. They only had each other now.
As a result of her parent's deaths, Elena shut everyone out. She ended up dumping Matt and distancing herself from her friends and family in order to deal with her grief. The memories of that night haunted her every waking moment and consumed her dreams as well. Horrible flashes and sounds of the car crashing followed by the screams, the water surrounding her and closing in all around her. It scared the hell out of her. Elena just couldn't stop thinking about how her parents died and how she was still alive. Why did she get to live and they didn't? It didn't seem right. No matter how hard she tried, Elena couldn't stop blaming herself for what happened. If she hadn't called and asked her parents to come pick her up that night, they would still be alive and she wouldn't be feeling this way. While she had been grieving, Jeremy had resorted to drugs in order to hide his pain. With the new school year upon them now, she knew she needed to pull herself together and be strong for Jeremy's sake. Right now, he needed her more than ever.
Today was the first day of the new school year and as a result, Elena was up bright and early as she showered and dressed before gathering her supplies and stuffing them into her bookbag. As she was doing this, she could hear her aunt Jenna scuffling around downstairs. Jenna had become hers and Jeremy's new guardian after their parents died and she was doing the best she could considering everything that had happened. The Gilbert female was truly thankful to have her in her life.
Once she was certain she had everything she needed, Elena walked over to her bed and sat down before reaching over and grabbing her journal off the nightstand. The only way she could truly open up about how she was feeling was when she wrote in her journal. Writing had always been a passion of hers. She loved to write and she was good at it. It was a way to express herself and her feelings without having to burden anyone with her problems. Memories both good and bad were written down and kept in this journal. Her journal was one of her most prized possessions. Whenever she needed to vent or prepare herself for something, she would sit down and write. Now with the first day of school finally upon them, Elena really needed to write. Setting her journal on her lap, she removed the pen from the top, opened it to a new page, and started to write.
Dear Diary,
Today will be different. It has to be. I will smile, and it will be believable. For my friend's sake, for Jenna's sake, and most importantly, for Jeremy's sake. They need me to be strong, even if I'm broken on the inside. I have to appear strong on the outside. Despite the pain I feel, I will smile. My smile will say, "I'm fine, thank you." "Yes, I feel much better." I will no longer be the sad little girl who lost her parents. I will start fresh. Be someone new. It's the only way I'll make it through.
Sighing loudly, she closed her journal and forced herself to stand up once more before stuffing her diary into her bag. Walking over to the mirror, she took a moment to admire the photos adorning the walls of her bedroom. There were photos of her parents, her brother, and even of her, all smiling. So many amazing memories, but looking at them now only hurt her because they were gone and she would never see them again. Looking away from the pictures, the brunette admired her reflection in the mirror as she physically and mentally prepared herself for the day ahead of her. A brief inhale followed by the softest of exhales could be seen as she steeled herself before giving a small nod of her head and the tiniest of smiles appeared on her lips, but it was gone a few seconds later. Then, she turned away from the mirror, grabbed her dufflebag, and strode out of her room.
Making her way downstairs, Elena entered the kitchen and headed straight for the coffee maker and poured herself some coffee. She contemplated eating something, but decided against it. Honestly, she wasn't all that hungry. All she needed was a cup of coffee to provide her with that happy feeling that would help her get through the day.
Finishing her coffee, the young junior placed her empty mug in the sink before glancing out the window as a car horn sounded from outside. It was time. Taking a deep breath, she slowly exited the kitchen and walked towards the door.
"A new me," she muttered as she approached the door and pulled it open.
Stepping outside, Elena spotted her best friend's car parked beside the curb. Windows rolled down to reveal Bonnie Bennett and a smile spread across Elena's lips as she waved at her friend before reaching the car, pulling the door open, and slipping inside the passenger seat.
"Hey," Elena replied when Bonnie greeted her, arms wrapping around the other woman as she returned the hug that was given to her. "I'm fine, thank you," the female Gilbert responded when Bonnie asked her how she was. "Yes, much better." The words flowed naturally from her lips and her smile seemed almost genuine.
Giving a simple nod of her head, Elena turned away from her friend and focused her gaze out the window as Bonnie took off towards the school. As they started to drive into town, Elena felt unease in her lower belly but she quickly pushed it away as Bonnie started to tell her about her grandmother thinking she was psychic. While she was talking, the female Gilbert felt herself spacing out. Her friend's words faded away into the background as her mind drifted elsewhere. Staring off straight ahead, she gazed out in front of her without really seeing anything. Only when Bonnie shouted her name was she pulled out of her daze.
"I did it again, didn't I? Sorry, Bonnie," she apologized as she focused her gaze back on her friend, recalling what her friend told her about possibly being psychic. "Right. Predict something about me then," Elena said, regarding the other woman curiously. Listening to her words, Elena allowed a grin to spread across her lips, but it didn't fully reach her eyes. Truthfully, she wasn't so sure if she believed Bonnie about this year being kick ass and about her being beyond happy, but she wasn't going to argue with her. Deep down, the female Gilbert hoped that she was right, but they would have to wait and see what happened.
The rest of the drive was made in silence. When they finally arrived, both girls quickly stepped out and headed for the school's entrance. Inside, the hallways was littered with students talking and socializing while some gathered the things they would need for their first class before stuffing the rest into their lockers. Leaning up against a set of lockers, dark brown hues darted around. It felt a bit weird being back in school again after everything that happened. Bonnie started going on about the latest gossip, but Elena didn't really hear what she was saying as she stared straight ahead.
Suddenly, she was pulled out of her daze yet again as Caroline rushed over to them. Arms slowly wrapped around the blonde as the she pulled her into a hug. "Caroline, I'm right here and I'm fine, thank you,"she spoke up, repeating the same phrase she had used with Bonnie as her friend asked how she was before directing the question at Bonnie. "Yes, much better," Elena assured her when she asked if she was sure. Then Caroline started talking about how they had a new literature teacher and how he was supposed to be super hot, but the Gilbert female wasn't really all that interested in some new teacher. All she wanted was to get through the day.
Just then, the bell rang signaling it was time for class and her friends started to head off towards the classroom but stopped when they realized Elena wasn't following them.
"I'm going to stop by my locker really fast. I'll meet you guys in class, okay?"
Elena watched as the two of them walked off before slowly approaching her locker. Reaching up, she turned the lock as she quickly dialed in her combination before pulling open the door. Stuffing some things into her locker, Elena released a soft sigh. She had managed to keep her composure thus far, but the day was far from over. Being back in school and facing all these people was super overwhelming, but the female Gilbert would get through it. She had to.
"You can do this, Elena," she murmured softly to herself as she shut the door to her locker and headed to class.
Right before the final bell rang, Elena entered the classroom and made her way to the back of the room before taking a seat next to Bonnie and Caroline. Bringing her gaze to the front of the room, her eyes fell on their new teacher, Mr. Smith, as she waited for the lesson to begin.
