Elena Gilbert
With the first day of school over and done with Elena made her way off campus and walked over to Mystic Falls Cemetery. The female Gilbert couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief as she entered the familiar cemetery grounds. She had done it. She had made it through the entire school day without breaking down. Walking along the familiar dirt path, she glanced around to see if anyone else was around, but the cemetery was silent as she soon wandered off the path and onto the grass, moving past the gravestones until she came to the spot that she had been coming to for the last few months. Removing the book bag from her shoulder, Elena sat down in front of one of the statues and leaned back against it as a soft, sad sigh escaped her lips. The cemetery had become a place of refuge for her when she wanted to be alone with her feelings and just write. It had taken her a long time to come here after her parents died as the thought of seeing their names engraved in the cold gravestone had been too much to bear, but eventually, she had forced herself to come and visit their grave, and the reality of what had happened slowly sank in. Her parents were gone and they were never coming back. Chocolate brown eyes slowly wandered to the headstone where the names Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers Gilbert were inscribed in the cool, hard stone. A pang could be felt in her chest as her heart clenched painfully and she felt the familiar sadness wash over her. Now that no one was around she didn't have to pretend like everything was okay anymore, that she was okay. Elena was not fine. Not even close.
Losing one parent was hard enough, but losing both parents was a whole different situation altogether. The pain of such a devastating loss was unimaginable. It was the type of pain that no one could ever possibly understand unless a person had gone through the same thing themselves. And no doubt, such a loss could take a traumatic toll on a person, especially in a case such as Elena's. She had been in the accident that killed her parents and had miraculously survived. That feeling of sorrow and guilt had been suffocating and it still was. Her parents' deaths had left a stabbing pain in her chest. A big gaping hole where her heart should be. Such an intense pain that she felt like she could hardly breathe, constantly gasping for air. It was like she was in that car all over again, slowly drowning as the water gradually engulfed her. All she could think was, why had she survived? Why did she deserve to live and not her parents? She should've died with them. Hell, part of her soul had already died with them, why not all of her? Now she was left with this heavy sense of loneliness, sadness, and guilt. Their deaths were all her fault. If she hadn't called them and asked them to come pick her up from the party, they would have stayed home and the accident would have never happened. Her parents would still be alive. It was all her fault.
Elena felt completely and utterly alone. Despite being surrounded by friends who loved her and supported her, she felt more alone than ever, and it didn't help that she was pushing everyone away so she could suffer the pain alone. Elena had her reasons though. She just didn't want to talk about it. She couldn't talk about it, because if she did, it would hurt way too much. Reliving that night repeatedly both in her waking time and in her dreams was bad enough without talking about it out loud. Not only that, but no one truly understood what she was going through. What it was like for everything to be perfectly fine one minute only to lose two of the people she loved most in a matter of only a few short minutes. So what was the point? Besides, she didn't want them feeling sorry for her. It made her feel weak and pathetic. They all saw her as the sad little girl who lost her parents, but she didn't want to be seen that way. Elena couldn't afford to be weak. She had to stay strong for the sake of her little brother and keep him out of trouble. Moving forward wouldn't be easy, but it was something she had to do. Still, that was easier said than done.
Reaching inside her book bag, Elena slowly pulled out her diary and pen. She needed to write, needed to put all of her feelings on paper. Writing had always been a passion of hers, but it had also become her coping mechanism since her parents died. It felt good to write out her feelings and it was a lot easier to write them down than to actually talk about them. Opening up to a new page, Elena began to write.
Dear Diary,
I made it through the day. I must have said, "I'm fine, thanks," at least 37 times and I didn't mean it once. But no one noticed. When someone asks, "how are you?" they really don't want an answer. They ask to be polite or because they have nothing better to say. In reality though, they are too absorbed in their own problems to really notice other people's problems. But that doesn't matter. I was able to put on a show and convince everyone that I'm fine. The truth is though, I'm not fine. I'm barely hanging on. Jeremy is spiraling out of control and I've been trying to help him, but it hasn't worked. I don't know what to do. I don't know how to go on living after what happened to my parents. I don't know how to be the responsible big sister that my brother needs me to be. To be honest, I don't know how much longer I can hold it together.
A sudden and rather loud cawing had the brunette lifting her head up to see a large, black crow perched on top of her parents' gravestone staring straight at her. At first, she just shrugged it off as she looked back down at her journal resting in her lap and resumed writing, but the bird let out another loud squawk causing her to look up once more. It was staring directly at her, almost watching her, which was a bit unnerving. What was it doing here? Why was it watching her? If that wasn't creepy enough, a mysterious fog began to set in, sweeping over the cemetery as it surrounded her on all sides. Glancing around, Elena felt fear rush over her as the fog grew thicker and thicker. What the hell was going on? Slowly and hesitantly, the young female stood up and looked all around her, suddenly getting the sense that she was no longer alone. Someone was there with her. Watching her.
"Hello?" she called out. "Who's there?" Heart pounding a mile a minute, her first instinct was to run, but something stopped her. "Whoever you are, show yourself!" Her voice was shaky as she spoke, but Elena stood her ground, waiting to see if the mysterious stranger would show themselves.

━ Damon Salvatore━ Being a vampire had so many perks. He had different abilities that he could use in order to advance his own agenda. He had heightened senses, enhanced speed, and strength. He truly embraced everything that he had become back in 1864. Even though he originally didn't want to complete the transition in the first place. His younger brother Stefan made him do it and that's when he declared that he was going to make his brother's immortal life miserable. His decision was taken away from him. After he thought that Katherine had died, he didn't want to be immortal. All he wanted was to die and Stefan wouldn't even let him have that. It caused him to be furious.
But as the years went on, Damon did some digging. He learned that Katherine was not actually dead and that she was locked beneath the tomb of Fells Church. Trapped with no way to get out. But if she did get out, she would be able to feed, and then she would be fine. Then Damon and Katherine could be reunited. He loved her. That didn't change at all. And that's why he came to Mystic Falls in the first place. That and the fact that he had the chance to torment his little brother since he seemed to be back in town as well. Two for the price of one? Damon would gladly take that chance.
Except when he came back, he noticed a girl that looked exactly like Katherine. At first he thought that it was her. But then he thought that it was impossible. That she was supposed to be locked in the tomb and that was the whole reason why he came back to Mystic Falls in the first place. But it couldn't have been her, right? That wasn't possible. But he had to know. He was also starving. So that wasn't exactly helping. But he had enough energy to use a bit of his neat vampire tricks that he picked up over the years. So he used his abilities to turn himself into a crow in order to get a better view.
The woman ended up going to the cemetery, which was a strange place to go to. Especially during the day. But who was he to judge? He perched himself on to of a gravestone and when he let out a caw, it startled the woman. If he had human features in this form, he would have smirked. He continued to watch her closely and he could tell that she was starting to get freaked out over it. But as he used his powers to create a fog in the cemetery, he flapped his wings and removed himself from the gravestone. Once the fog was thick enough, he transformed back into his 'human' form and watched her from the fog. She sounded just like Katherine when she asked who was out there and for that person to show herself. Maybe Damon could toy with her.
He stepped through the fog, a smirk playing on his lips. "Hey. I come in peace." He said with a slight laugh as he held up his hands, indicating that he didn't mean any harm. Well, that was to be determined. The afternoon was still young and there was still some time to decide what he actually wanted to do with her. But he also wanted to figure out why she looked like Katherine. Because from her heartbeat, she wasn't a vampire. Which meant that Katherine was still in the tomb. Or so he thought anyway. "I was just taking a walk when this fog rolled in. Crazy, huh?" But of course he was the reason why the fog was there in the first place. And he needed to feed.
